Unlocking the Secrets of Security: An Interview with Mark Tobias

In the world of security and locks, few names are as renowned as Mark Tobias. Recently, we had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss his groundbreaking new book, “Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering.” This captivating interview delves deep into the intricacies of lock manufacturing, the challenges of security engineering, and the fascinating vulnerabilities that often go unnoticed.

A Conversation with Mark Tobias

Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering

Mark Tobias has recently released a book that’s been causing quite a stir in the security and lockpicking communities. Entitled, “Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering,” the book is a detailed guide on the complexities of locks and the often-overlooked vulnerabilities that can compromise even the most secure systems.

“This is my eighth book,” Tobias mentioned. “I decided to write about my experience, especially as a lawyer, because all of security is about liability.”

The Birth of Insecurity Engineering

Tobias highlights a critical issue in the world of lock manufacturing – insecurity engineering. “We work for all the major lock manufacturers, both in the U.S. and Europe, and the Middle East. And the problem is what some of them are doing is insecurity engineering,” Tobias explained. “They are not thinking their way through bypass problems.”

The book itself is a 700-page tome full of detailed history, legal insights, patents and intellectual property details – all crucial elements that go into the making and securing of locks. Tobias describes the public’s common misconception about locks as being simple and easy to secure, highlighting the sophisticated and complex engineering that truly goes into making them work both properly and securely.

A Pandemic Project

Mark revealed that the book was a product of his pandemic sabbatical. “I decided during the pandemic, traveling, I wasn’t being interrupted. That was my COVID sabbatical. And I was lucky I didn’t get it. I lived in Pennsylvania where we didn’t have a problem, where I lived. And so I sat for three years and wrote the book.” During this time, Tobias meticulously documented his extensive knowledge and experience, creating a comprehensive guide for industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.

An Insider’s View of Security Failures

The book is not just theoretical; it delves into real-world examples of security failures and how they were rectified. Tobias discussed several notable instances where lock manufacturers had to address security vulnerabilities following his and his team’s discoveries. “For instance, Medeco—a company whose locks we deconstructed in our previous works—had to admit their locks were not as bump-proof as they claimed. This revelation forced them, and many other companies, to rethink their designs and improve their security measures.”

Tobias also discussed the importance of patent awareness and practical knowledge for mechanical engineers, stressing that many are taught theory but lack practical application skills. “These engineers, when they go to work for lock manufacturers, often have no imagination. Now I’m generalizing, but they don’t have any imagination,” he said, emphasizing that practical problem-solving skills are essential in the industry.

The Evolution of Lock Security

One fascinating aspect of Tobias’ book is the evolution of lock security. The narrative takes readers back several centuries, detailing the methods used to bypass lever locks, pin tumbler locks, and warded locks. “I went back 4,000 years in history. That’s probably the best read I’ve ever done in my life,” Tobias remarked. The book offers a rich historical context that enhances understanding of modern security challenges.

Real-World Applications and Future Directions

Tobias and his co-author, Tobias Blaise Manus, have spent years honing their expertise. They’ve consulted for many lock manufacturers, aiming to improve security designs and address vulnerabilities. The book also outlines 180 rules Tobias developed over the years, beginning with the premise that “all security is about liability.”

The Impact of Modern Technology

The integration of electronics with traditional mechanical locks presents new challenges. Tobias talked about some vulnerabilities his team has exploited involving the interface between software and hardware. Projects like using the Flipper Zero device to clone hotel room keys and manipulate Tesla doors illustrate the ever-evolving landscape of security threats and the need for continuous innovation in response.

The Three-Two Rule: Time, Tools, and Training

Central to Tobias’s methodology is the 3T2R rule, a framework designed to assess the security of a mechanism. The rule stands for Time, Tools, and Training, followed by Repeatability and Reliability. This rule helps in understanding whether a lock is truly secure by considering not just the theoretical aspects but also practical, real-world scenarios.

Major Security Cases: A Look Back and Forward

Tobias’s book also covers major security cases, such as the vulnerabilities found in Kaba’s push-button locks and the subsequent industry changes. “Look at the Kaba nightmare in 2010 with the push-button lock that can be opened in two seconds by a magnet. … One of the critical components in that lock, and there are millions of them, is magnetic,” Tobias explained. This example underscores the need for continuous vigilance and innovation in lock security.

What’s Next?

Tobias isn’t stopping with his latest book. He revealed plans to work on a second edition that will address attacks on electronic cylinders and residential-grade electronic locks, which are increasingly becoming targets for various forms of attacks. “Residential grade electronic locks are so vulnerable to every form of attack going,” Tobias noted, hinting at a future filled with more rigorous security challenges and solutions.

Insecurity Engineering Conversation with Marc Tobias Final Thoughts

Wrapping up the interview, Tobias emphasized the importance of feedback from readers and the industry. “If you find anything wrong or want updates, get a hold of me. My email address is in the book,” he encouraged, showcasing his dedication to continual improvement and community engagement.

Conclusion

“Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering” is more than just a book; it’s a comprehensive guide that merges historical context with modern challenges, providing invaluable insights for anyone involved in or curious about the field of security. Whether you are a professional locksmith, a security engineer, or simply an enthusiast, this book promises to be an essential addition to your library.

Kwikset and in Canada the Weiser SmartKey Locks fail / malfunction at an alarming rate. This customer attempted to remove all the door lock hardware and find a replacement lock. The customer called us to replace or fix the lock.

I keep a dozen or more replacement cylinders in stock. I do not like the SmartKey locks because they are unreliable but in this case all the townhouses had the same style and finish locks.

Easy replacement but “no guarantee or warranty” with me on any Weiser or Kwikset Products.

Weiser Smartkey Lock Troubleshooting

If you’re experiencing a Weiser SmartKey lock failure or the lock is not opening, there are a few possible reasons. Some common causes of Kwikset SmartKey lock failure include:

  1. Incorrect key insertion: Make sure the key is inserted all the way into the lock and turned fully.
  2. Dirty or worn key: Dirt and wear on the key can prevent it from properly interacting with the lock. Clean the key and try it again.
  3. Batteries: If the lock has an electronic keypad, check if the batteries are dead. If so, replace the batteries and try to open the lock again.
  4. Mechanical issue: If the lock still does not open, there may be a mechanical issue with the lock that needs to be addressed.
  5. Lubricate the lock with TriFlow, Key Saver, WD40 Silicon, Graphite-free, 3-IN-ONE Lock Dry Lube, etc. but do not use Graphite or WD40 Penetrating Oil.

If the lock is still not opening, it’s recommended to contact Weiser customer service or Mr. Locksmith  for assistance. They can help diagnose the issue and provide a solution to get the lock functioning properly.

Question: Why does the GM produced H1 Hummer us a Ford 5 Cut Ignition?

H1 Hummer

The civilian model began in part because of the persistence of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who saw an Army convoy while filming Kindergarten Cop in Oregon and began to campaign and lobby for a civilian version to be available on the market. In 1992, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee vehicle to the public under the brand name “Hummer”. The first two Hummer H1s to be sold were purchased by Schwarzenegger.

M998 Humvee

2000 Hummer H1 Broken Ignition. H1 Hummer 5 Cut Ford Ignition Malfunction. The Ford 5 Cut ignition failed and this is usually caused by a small piece of the buzzer jams the pins or get bunched up in the back of the ignition . In most cases it is easy to remove the broken piece, turn the ignition to the accessory position, depress the retainer pin and remove the ignition. However, somebody who did not know what they were doing, cracked the ignition and turned a simply car locksmith job into a bit of a nightmare.

Customer was happy to get back on the road. Note: H1 Hummer manufactured by GM, has a GM Diesel engine but uses a Ford 5 Cut Ignition.

Mr. Locksmith White Rock: (604) 210-9875

Mr. Locksmith Automotive White Rock(604) 259-7617

This is the XHorse. It’s a key tool plus. We’ll get all into the bits and pieces. I just got it – literally, a couple of hours ago and we’re gonna unbox it. And we’re going to take a peek at it, and hopefully, it’s got some cool features that I really need badly – and then we’ll talk about that too. So, let’s see what we got here. Let’s unbox it, and, let’s see if it’s got the special cables we need.

Okie dokie. What do we got here? Nice case. Here is the XHorse Key Tool Plus. So let’s see what we got here. I’ve never seen one, I’ve been looking at them online, and this may have exactly what I need. So, instructions – most instructions are useless so let’s hope for the best.

Right off the bat, it looks kind of rugged – it looks pretty good. I’ve heard good things but let’s see how it works for us. We got a couple of ports, and everything – looks really, really nice. Apparently, this can reset Toyota proxes and we’ll be putting that to the test. We’re actually going to use this as our go-to-machine. We’ve got quite a bit newer cars, and we were running across problems so let’s see if that’s got that.

What do we have in here? Cable – looks like the recharging cable. OBD 2 cable. Serial. Port connection. Couple of adapters. It looks like they’re very well built. And Xhorse supertransponders.  I’ve been happy with some of their other products – we’ll talk about that later.

What more do we got here? More cables. I haven’t looked it up but I think this is the real problem I have right now. The newer Fords – if they go into alarm, you have to reset the alarm and nothing we have can do it. So, this is what started the big push. If you looked into my previous videos, I have five or six car key programmers and nothing has this at the moment. Though, I think one of the products may have something but this is what we’re running across – an awful lot of. Newer Fords, the alarm is going off, and you can not program a key without this and the compatible software in here.

What else we got. Box is excellent. This looks like a flasher. This looks like stuff to reprogram. Again, this is just a quick unboxing. We’re gonna put this right into the field starting in the morning. So this is that kind of “late-at-night, got-it, wanted-to-unbox-it, show-it-off.” And, we’re going to play with it. Give me a couple of weeks and we’re going to have some in-depth programming of this. We’ll see what it can or can’t do. And we’re going to use this as our go-to-programmer. And then see how we do. We’re going to use the Chrysler Star – hopefully that’s in here. We have some stars cables anyway, but, we’re running across those Chrysler, Dodge, Ram with the star cable.

So, we’re going to give this a really good test starting in the morning. I’ll have some little updates as we go along. We’ll start seeing what it can or can’t do. So far, impressed. Let’s see what happens!

Knipex Pliers Replace Adjustable Wrench | Mr. Locksmith™ White Rock

Knipex Pliers Replace Adjustable Wrench: KNIPEX pliers stand for quality made in Germany. Worldwide leading pliers manufacturer for professional users in trade and industry.

Knipex Pliers Replace Adjustable Wrench

Mr. Locksmith White Rock: (604) 210-9875

Mr. Locksmith Automotive White Rock(604) 259-7617

I am now replacing my crescent wrenches and other pliers with the Knipex pliers. Now, I do not use this. I saw it for sale and it wasn’t expensive and I bought it and I just hang it on the shop wall, so I just thought I would show you. So this is what I use. I’ve been using this forever and in my installation kit, in my everyday carry. I saw this. I am very, very happy with my Knipex tools, so I thought I’d replace this crescent wrench in my everyday carry and it’s getting heavy, but I’m trying to make it lighter. So I replaced it with this.

So let’s just take a peek at what we got here. So what bugs the heck out of me on my crescent wrench, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. It always comes loose. So you’re trying to use it, I put up with this my whole life. Unless you got the exact tool you’re needing, but in your locksmith case, this is what I use and I really just need, I use it mostly for mailbox locks. So I’m happy with my other tools. So this is the Knipex pliers and it’s got the little button here. look at wide that goes. So this crescent wrench is going in the spare kit. This is going in my everyday carry, in my tool case. So that’s the Knipex. Look at that. No matter what angle it does, it’s locked in. It’s not gonna move on me ’til I push the button and move it where I wanna go. So this is gonna be really handy and

Knipex Pliers

Ia going to show you how I use it on a mailbox lock. So this is my mailbox lock. The Mailbox lock kit has all the different tail pieces for it. So let’s just put this tail piece on there for now. Just for the demonstrations. Normally, I usually install it first and then I put this on last. I’m trying to make this good for the camera to see. Go finger tight. Now what I can do hold my lock. Take the key out, really, put that on there. They are down there just snug. You can really over-tighten these, so be careful. Give a little test. Lube that up. So, perfect. So this tool has replaced my crescent wrench. So this Knipex pliers has now replaced my crescent wrench, which for years has driven me nuts, but I didn’t really have anything better. This is way better. I willl be using this every day now and soon I will have some more videos with this in action on job sites.

This is the second most little tool I’ve ever bought. It’s a Knipex pliers, it was under $50. Look at the size of this, it’s tiny. It’s extremely strong from what I’ve seen. I bought these for my pick case. I’ll have some stuff showing my little tools that I use for broken keys and whatnot. This is just gonna come in handy for grabbing little bits and pieces. It’s overpriced, yeah, I wanted one and I’ll show you how I put it in my, in my pick case.

How To Install Lori Single Cylinder Deadbolt | Mr. Locksmith White Rock

How To Install Lori Single Cylinder Deadbolt | Mr. Locksmith White Rock: Installing a Lori deadbolt. The Lori Deadbolt can be  a little bit confusing, because most deadbolts have the screws on the inside, so it’s pretty easy to figure out how to remove it, its double cylinders are a little different, so most of our Kwikset, Weiser, and Schlage deadbolts is pretty simple. You have a couple of screws, you take it out the traditional way. The Lori Deadbolts have a set screw hidden along the side of the bolt. You will need a 5/16-inch long-shaft Allen wrench to install or remove the set screws.

How To Install a Lori Single Cylinder Deadbolt

Tools to Install Lori Deadbolt

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 5/16-inch long-shaft Allen wrench
  1. Open the Door
  2. Detach the slide bolt faceplate from the door edge by removing the two flathead screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
  3. Remove the thumb latch assembly from the interior side of the door, if applicable, by removing the two screw bolts on either side of the latch handle, then pulling the assembly horizontally from the door.
  4. Slip the long shaft of a 5/16-inch Allen wrench into the space on either side of the slide bolt to engage in the cylinder set screws and turn the set screw counterclockwise two to three full turns to loosen. Repeat for the set screw on the other side of the slide bolt.
  5. Remove the deadbolt cylinders by turning the cylinders counterclockwise until the cylinder is free of the mortise housing. You can insert the deadbolt’s key into the cylinder for leverage in turning the cylinder. Repeat for the opposite side cylinder in double-keyed models.
  6. Pull the slide bolt assembly from the door edge, then remove the cylinder housing from the door hole.

Lori Single Cylinder Deadbolt

A couple of screws. You can see the screws, you can see how to take it apart. And everything apart. So that’s your traditional single cylinder deadbolt. Now I’ll show you the Lori. They’re made by a ilco, UniCan, kaba, whatever you want to call them this week. It’s not my favorite deadbolt. In the year, you know, 35 years ago, it was a good deadbolt and I’ll show you why, because we could make almost any cylinder fit this. So, and that’s why they’re confusing when you see this on the door. Sometimes they’ll say Lori, other times they’ll say, could be Schlage, could be kaba, could be medical. It could be almost any type of lock. And you’ll see why it’s confusing for Locksmiths and also beginner locksmiths, or just the home, do it yourself or try to take this Lori lock off the door. So this is the ilko Lori, pretty simple. It’s instructions. Now, you’ll see it’s already slightly different than our normal deadbolts. And what the important pieces on this is, it’s the Allen key. You needed a long reach Allen wrench or Allen key. What do you want to call it? The Allen wrench or Allen key is five 64 of an inch. So this is what you need. And this is what’s a real pain in the butt. And it has to be a longer one, the normal. So sometimes your little kits don’t have the reach for it. So that’s the most important thing to the installation of this lock. And we’ll just show you what we got here. Now, this is a single cylinder and it’s pretty basic stuff. What you have here is the housing and it’s pretty easy. It says right on there top, is there an inside and outside? Here’s the confusing part. It has the little set screws and you can’t really see it when you’re trying to take it off. But when we’re putting it in, it’s a little bit different. So to install it, we have the cylinder housing, make sure your set screws are flush. That makes it easier to do the install. Top there, just place it in there, take our dead bolt, basically going to feed it in there. This is the single cylinder deadbolt. So this is what comes in the kit. Now this is what gets a little confusing. These machine screws are for holding the thumb turn on, these ones in the bag here, are for holding the housing to the bolts. So we’ll take these out right now. So there we have, now the bolt is into the housing. So the next step is, we have to change, this is a mortis cam and they have to use the Adams right cam. Take it off, put it in, and make sure, you know, you get the right side down. This will set flush, and that’s another common mistake. People put these in. So again, just tight don’t over crank them. And they have to be flush. So we’ve got the Adam’s right cam on the boarder cylinder. Everything’s good, we got the right key. Okay, everything’s perfect. So the spacer goes on first, then our little springy cover. And what we have to do now, take the outside housing, and what we’re going to do, is we’re going to install it. It’s going to screw in similar to an Adam’s rights storefront. But we’re going to screw the mortar cylinder in here. And again, don’t cross thread it. It’s pretty easy to cross thread. And I take the key out a little bit and gently get it snug. We have the mortar cylinder in the outside. Now I’m going to install the thumb turn on the inside. Other screws. Again, don’t force anything. You’ll cross thread the heck out of everything. So again, just do it snug, double check it, and check this. Now what we have to do to make sure, make sure that’s vertical. Now this is the confusing part. You can take your Allen wrench 564s. It has to be long. Now this is the difficult part for most people. You have to get it right in there, and just sort of wiggle it a little bit, and then you get in the set screw. Right to tighten, and again, snug not crazy, so we know we’re in, pull it out. Try that. Yeah, we obviously didn’t, I think we’re, I got to go in a little bit tighter. Cause see how it’s binding a little bit there, right there. We’re either binding on the, I think we’re binding on the set screws. You’d have to back it off or put it in. So let’s just snug. Now it’s a lot better. So just check by putting your, lock it, take the key out, unlock it, take the key out, one more check on the inside. Now we don’t have to do the set screw there because it’s a single cylinder, and these are held into the housing, these two screws. So we don’t have to set the screw there. The cover plate. Make sure it works. Don’t over-tighten these, if you over-tighten it, you’re going to find the bolt won’t open and close properly. There we go. Pretty simple. The advantage of this lock in the old days, again, I am not a fan of it right now, we run across a lot of them, is I can put any mortar cylinder with the Adam’s right cam in here. So I can put in anything. I can put it in a high security, any mortar cylinder lock, or any brand lock, any brand name will screw into that, and you can key it up to anything. So it’s a very versatile. In the old days it was versatile because we didn’t have too much choice. And now we have so many choices right now. As you know my favorite is the, take the Schlage, the B 660s or the 560s, or even the the end series, the new ones, the 60 ends. I can put the kick cylinder, we call them kicks owners. So it’s a cylinder we can put in. But we’re talking about this lock today. So this is the Lori Kaba. In its day it was versatile, but we run across a lot of these and some customers still have them, and some commercial buildings have boxes of these things. So we’re still installing them. They’re okay, I’m not a fan of them. I find them, if they’re exposed to weather, that little set screw rust up and the inside rust up. Again, not my favorite lock. It’s not that cheap either, but we run across them. So this is the Ilco, Lori, Kaba style deadbolt. It’s mostly called the Lori single cylinder deadbolt. Hope you enjoyed the video. Good luck when you run across these. Okay, have a good day. I hope you enjoyed watching this video.
