Unlocking the Secrets of Security: An Interview with Mark Tobias

In the world of security and locks, few names are as renowned as Mark Tobias. Recently, we had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss his groundbreaking new book, “Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering.” This captivating interview delves deep into the intricacies of lock manufacturing, the challenges of security engineering, and the fascinating vulnerabilities that often go unnoticed.

A Conversation with Mark Tobias

Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering

Mark Tobias has recently released a book that’s been causing quite a stir in the security and lockpicking communities. Entitled, “Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering,” the book is a detailed guide on the complexities of locks and the often-overlooked vulnerabilities that can compromise even the most secure systems.

“This is my eighth book,” Tobias mentioned. “I decided to write about my experience, especially as a lawyer, because all of security is about liability.”

The Birth of Insecurity Engineering

Tobias highlights a critical issue in the world of lock manufacturing – insecurity engineering. “We work for all the major lock manufacturers, both in the U.S. and Europe, and the Middle East. And the problem is what some of them are doing is insecurity engineering,” Tobias explained. “They are not thinking their way through bypass problems.”

The book itself is a 700-page tome full of detailed history, legal insights, patents and intellectual property details – all crucial elements that go into the making and securing of locks. Tobias describes the public’s common misconception about locks as being simple and easy to secure, highlighting the sophisticated and complex engineering that truly goes into making them work both properly and securely.

A Pandemic Project

Mark revealed that the book was a product of his pandemic sabbatical. “I decided during the pandemic, traveling, I wasn’t being interrupted. That was my COVID sabbatical. And I was lucky I didn’t get it. I lived in Pennsylvania where we didn’t have a problem, where I lived. And so I sat for three years and wrote the book.” During this time, Tobias meticulously documented his extensive knowledge and experience, creating a comprehensive guide for industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.

An Insider’s View of Security Failures

The book is not just theoretical; it delves into real-world examples of security failures and how they were rectified. Tobias discussed several notable instances where lock manufacturers had to address security vulnerabilities following his and his team’s discoveries. “For instance, Medeco—a company whose locks we deconstructed in our previous works—had to admit their locks were not as bump-proof as they claimed. This revelation forced them, and many other companies, to rethink their designs and improve their security measures.”

Tobias also discussed the importance of patent awareness and practical knowledge for mechanical engineers, stressing that many are taught theory but lack practical application skills. “These engineers, when they go to work for lock manufacturers, often have no imagination. Now I’m generalizing, but they don’t have any imagination,” he said, emphasizing that practical problem-solving skills are essential in the industry.

The Evolution of Lock Security

One fascinating aspect of Tobias’ book is the evolution of lock security. The narrative takes readers back several centuries, detailing the methods used to bypass lever locks, pin tumbler locks, and warded locks. “I went back 4,000 years in history. That’s probably the best read I’ve ever done in my life,” Tobias remarked. The book offers a rich historical context that enhances understanding of modern security challenges.

Real-World Applications and Future Directions

Tobias and his co-author, Tobias Blaise Manus, have spent years honing their expertise. They’ve consulted for many lock manufacturers, aiming to improve security designs and address vulnerabilities. The book also outlines 180 rules Tobias developed over the years, beginning with the premise that “all security is about liability.”

The Impact of Modern Technology

The integration of electronics with traditional mechanical locks presents new challenges. Tobias talked about some vulnerabilities his team has exploited involving the interface between software and hardware. Projects like using the Flipper Zero device to clone hotel room keys and manipulate Tesla doors illustrate the ever-evolving landscape of security threats and the need for continuous innovation in response.

The Three-Two Rule: Time, Tools, and Training

Central to Tobias’s methodology is the 3T2R rule, a framework designed to assess the security of a mechanism. The rule stands for Time, Tools, and Training, followed by Repeatability and Reliability. This rule helps in understanding whether a lock is truly secure by considering not just the theoretical aspects but also practical, real-world scenarios.

Major Security Cases: A Look Back and Forward

Tobias’s book also covers major security cases, such as the vulnerabilities found in Kaba’s push-button locks and the subsequent industry changes. “Look at the Kaba nightmare in 2010 with the push-button lock that can be opened in two seconds by a magnet. … One of the critical components in that lock, and there are millions of them, is magnetic,” Tobias explained. This example underscores the need for continuous vigilance and innovation in lock security.

What’s Next?

Tobias isn’t stopping with his latest book. He revealed plans to work on a second edition that will address attacks on electronic cylinders and residential-grade electronic locks, which are increasingly becoming targets for various forms of attacks. “Residential grade electronic locks are so vulnerable to every form of attack going,” Tobias noted, hinting at a future filled with more rigorous security challenges and solutions.

Insecurity Engineering Conversation with Marc Tobias Final Thoughts

Wrapping up the interview, Tobias emphasized the importance of feedback from readers and the industry. “If you find anything wrong or want updates, get a hold of me. My email address is in the book,” he encouraged, showcasing his dedication to continual improvement and community engagement.

Conclusion

“Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering” is more than just a book; it’s a comprehensive guide that merges historical context with modern challenges, providing invaluable insights for anyone involved in or curious about the field of security. Whether you are a professional locksmith, a security engineer, or simply an enthusiast, this book promises to be an essential addition to your library.

Introduction to Sentry Safes

Sentry Safes manufactures the most safes sold in North America. They’re inexpensive. They shouldn’t really be called safes. They’re fire resistant containers. They do a very good job as a fire resistant container.

However, for putting valuables in, they’re not good. They’re so easy to open.

Common Misconceptions about Sentry Safes

A lot of locksmiths are afraid to open Sentry Safes.

Probably because it says safe. Just think of it as a metal or not even a metal box. It’s a plastic sometimes box with a cheap lock on it.

The MILWAUKEE M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT CP3.0 Battery Pack provides 50% more power and runs 50% cooler vs M18 REDLITHIUM CP battery packs. This increased performance results in the same power and runtime of a M18 REDLITHIUM XC battery in a lighter and more compact package. The 18-volt battery pack delivers fade-free power and runs substantially cooler through heavy applications, allowing trade professionals to push their cordless tools throughout a wide application range. The REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT CP3.0 battery is fully compatible with all 175+ Milwaukee M18 solutions.

Milwaukee M18 for Locksmiths

If you’re a regular on my channel, you know I like the Milwaukee. I’ve had everything. Makita, DeWalt, played with the Bosch, wasn’t too pleased. I’ve been very happy, whether we’ve got the DeWalts or the Milwaukees, they’re both very, very similar. I tend to find the Milwaukee a little bit better. Plus they hooked me very early on. I can push the battery and see what the charge is on this battery. I just love it. I can check it anytime. I’ve had really good luck with the batteries.

Locksmith Tools

What I found though, I use the, these are the three amp. They’re the X C3.0. And I’ve had the 1.5s, they’re half the size. The problem is the half size ones don’t have enough amps or guts to run your – I take the cordless grinder and I turn it into a cordless cutter. And I just found I have to use minimum of the three amp. And if you look at the Milwaukees, they’ve got, you know, I’m just, this is for locksmithing. The three amp has been good enough for me on everything I’ve used so far. It’s been fantastic. It’s good. I have lots of these, but the 1.5s I find just don’t cut it. So what – I’ve always used the three X C3.0s, but what I’m finding now is this new one. So this one’s called the high output… 0C? Now what is it? High output CP 3.0. So this is a three amp. And in theory, it’s lighter. A little bit lighter than this one, a little bit more slim line, and it’s three amps and it’s got 50% more power. So… now, this won’t make any difference. If you put it – really, if you’re putting it into lights or into your cordless vacuum cleaner. Mr. Locksmith™

Milwaukee PACKOUT 2 Drawer Toolbox For Locksmiths

Ever since the Milwaukee Packout Kit, modular system, came together, I’ve loved it except for one thing: I wanted drawers. So now I have my first set. This is two drawers. It’s part of the packout. And it’s really good. It’s got a spot where we can lock it. You can open it up. It’s got two large drawers. I just got it. Just going to start playing with it. I have the three-drawer, and the two-drawer. So here’s the two-drawer system. It’s really, really interesting. It’s good for the truck. It locks it down. So when it’s inside the service truck, I can put it in there, when I can put it on my wheel packout set. And I can also, when I’m on the job site, I could actually put a padlock on this. Very well-built, lots of quality here. This is gonna be good. Here we go, Milwaukee Packout. Here’s the two drawer. I’ve been waiting a long time for this.

White Rock is named for a large white boulder on its beach near the promenade, a glacial erratic that migrated south during the last glaciation. The 486-ton granite boulder was kept white by shellfish-eating seabirds whose guano covered the rock so much that 19th-century sailors used it as a beacon. It is now kept white through monthly applications of white paint by the city parks department and has been a graffiti target.[The White Rock Pier is located nearby. You hear the expression, especially when it comes to tools, “Cry once when you buy it or cry twice when you have to replace it.” You buy quality tools, you really save yourself a lot of time and money over the long haul. Same thing with key machines. I’ve got key machines that are 35 years old. They work absolutely perfect. They work some better than some of the new ones. That’s another story. But a couple of years ago, I bought the Knipex bolt cutters for cutting screws and tail pieces on locks. And because of that, I’ve now purchased, I’ve gone into the little tiny, probably the most expensive pliers I ever bought, the Knipex a pliers.

Knipex Pliers

This is in my pick kit, my EDC. I’ve replaced my crescent wrench with this little Knipex. With pliers, it’s basically replaced my crescent wrench. I’ll never go back to a crescent wrench. I’m actually now looking at the larger one, I still use a large crescent wrench for when I install with my pit ball, which is another video, when I’m installing latches on steel doors. So I’m gonna get the bigger set and that’ll be the next thing to add And these two tools, I call them channel locks, but they’re actually called water pump locks.

If I got to grab something, these are unbelievable. So this is in my tool case for every day. This is in my backup kit for when I have to do something a little bit more heavy duty. The power of these and the gripping power is unbelievable. I was in the rain the other day and some of my other tools that were getting rusty, my fault, I should have oiled them down. These things still look brand new. I’ve had excellent luck with these.

So I’m extremely happy with my Knipex pliers. Very, very happy. I’m gonna add a few more and you’ll be seeing them in future videos as I’m doing jobs. So these are the very best pliers you can buy. If you look at the Mack Trucks, I think even Snap-On, they’re carrying the nitpicks line in there. I don’t know if they’ve rebranded them, but you can buy these at your, they’re a little bit harder to find at your big box hardware stores ’cause they’re trying to flog their in-house brands. The advantage of buying off of a, I call it the big box trucks, is if something breaks, it’s very easy to do a replacement.

I haven’t had to replace the thing yet, but it’s extremely easy with other Snap-On tools I have, especially my circuit pliers. I tend to break them every couple of years. They just give me a new one. I have some screwdrivers and some Snap-On ratchets and whatnot. If I crack them, they replace them instantly. So I love my Snap-On truck guy and I love the Mack tools guy. That’s the two I like. The tools are good and a lot of them are selling these lines. So it’s just to go in and get a replacement.

Mr. Locksmith™ White Rock

This is the second most little tool I’ve ever bought. It’s a Knipex pliers, it was under $50. Look at the size of this, it’s tiny. It’s extremely strong from what I’ve seen. I bought these for my pick case. I’ll have some stuff showing my little tools that I use for broken keys and whatnot. This is just gonna come in handy for grabbing little bits and pieces. It’s overpriced, yeah, I wanted one and I’ll show you how I put it in my, in my pick case.

Knipex Pliers

Here is a comparison, these are new in my kit now in my everyday carry locksmith tools, and here’s the new tool. Apparently there’s one, that’s a five inch one. I don’t have that one yet. So I’m going to probably add that to my collection. This is my Knipex pliers that I have so far, and they’ve been updating my locksmith tools for these, and I’ll show you how this goes in my little pick case. First thing I grab when I go to do a lockout, most times.

The little pair of Knipex pliers are right in my case for every day, every single locksmith job, this is in my kit and that’s my little case for it. So I have a bigger pick case, but this is just first thing I grab, I got a lockout, go to the door. This is my first kit I grab. Hope you enjoyed the video, please subscribe, please hit the like button, and I hope you look forward to, I have some more interesting videos on locksmith tools coming up.

My top 3 Screwdrivers

Let us talk about three of the must have tools you have to have for your locksmith kit. Every one locksmith must have these three tools: Megapro set, Hex set, and the Tamperproof kit.

The Megapro set

The Megapro set – this is the original and inside it it has the flatheads, the Robinsons, the Phillips and some torques. That is absolutely fantastic. It’s a go-to tool. It’s always there, it’s got the tools.

The next one on my kit – the Hex set.

The Hex set

The Hex set – It’s got all the basic or the most popular sizes in it. You have to have this  screwdriver if you’re a locksmith because so many times you’ve misplaced your Allen keys. This is, a must have, fantastic tool. Especially we’re getting a lot of European made locks out there. you still need complete Allen key sets, but you can just grab this and 90% of the time, if not more, this will do the trick.

The other one is the Tamperproof kit.

The Tamperproof set

Tamperproof kit – This is the MegaPro. What it is, it’s for taking out the tamper-proof screws. It’s got all the most popular tamperproofs and torques an dthe flatheads with the holes inside. It is really, really cool.

So these are the three must have tools for everybody. You gotta have these in your locksmith kit. The original MegaPro, it’s got the most popular screws you’re going to run across every single day. The Hex, because you’re running across a lot of these in locks now, more and more all the time, this will probably, used 90% of the time, you’ll still need an Allen key set but it does the trick. And the Tamperproof. This will do for taking out those one way screws that are flatheads and it’s got the special bit for taking out the one way flatheads. It’s got the hex with the hole in it and the torques with the hole in it. Must have tools for the locksmith. For a beginner or a pro, this is a lifesaver. Have a good day. I now have four (4) Veto Pro Pac Tool bags for my locksmith tools.

Hi, I’m Terry. As a locksmith, I’m always trying to figure out how to carry my tools, how to have them convenient, what to do. I’ve tried everything over the years. As you get older, you also, now we’re looking at cart options; how am I gonna drag my tools around; what am I going to do? One thing that’s outlasted everything I’ve ever bought, is the Veto Pro Pac. They have an entire line, and I love they have the little ones; they have the larger kits. I’ve been using this for years.

I have other kits I use, and I tried Pelican cases, Pelican tool cases, which I really like, but these Vetos; I’ve also tried the stuff you buy at the various hardware stores; they’re selling packs and totes and all sorts of stuff. What lasts the best, the Veto Po Pac, Pro Pac.

They last forever. I would still order extra one of these shoulder straps, just ’cause it’s built so well; it lasts forever. It never wears out, never breaks. These things last forever. This is a great, this one here, this is probably like three years old, and look at it; it is like brand new.

The only disadvantage is, they’re empty, they’re quite heavy, and this is exposed to the weather when I’m sort of running in and out of job sites. It’s heavy, heavy duty; it’s expensive, but they last forever. My other bags I’ve bought, you know, between 50 and 70 dollars. They last me a year, if that, and they get pretty worn out, pretty quick.

These things last forever, and this is my enclosed one. This is just sort of one in the back of my, not my service truck, I just threw some tools in it. It just holds everything, everything in one spot. You can throw all your stuff in, you can throw your cordless drill, your picks, everything. I’ve been lookin’ at their backpack right now, for our Key Store, to have our guys run out and just do some quick little locked out of filing cabinets, so I’m looking at the Veto Pro backpack.

I will check out Veto Pro Pack website and see if they have something on wheels because they make such a fantastic system. What I really need is something on wheels. I put these right now on a little cart I have for out of the service truck, onto, up the elevator, because we’re downtown so lots of elevators and stairs, and I don’t wanna go back to the truck to get something

I forgot, so I throw these on a cart. I love this for my installation kit. This is just something just quick, easy, in the back of my personal vehicle, so if I get a lockout and I’m on the road, or I have to help somebody, I have my own personal tools with me. Again, great stuff, expensive, but they last forever, and fantastic, really, really good; I highly recommend it.
