Unlocking the Secrets of Security: An Interview with Mark Tobias

In the world of security and locks, few names are as renowned as Mark Tobias. Recently, we had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss his groundbreaking new book, “Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering.” This captivating interview delves deep into the intricacies of lock manufacturing, the challenges of security engineering, and the fascinating vulnerabilities that often go unnoticed.

A Conversation with Mark Tobias

Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering

Mark Tobias has recently released a book that’s been causing quite a stir in the security and lockpicking communities. Entitled, “Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering,” the book is a detailed guide on the complexities of locks and the often-overlooked vulnerabilities that can compromise even the most secure systems.

“This is my eighth book,” Tobias mentioned. “I decided to write about my experience, especially as a lawyer, because all of security is about liability.”

The Birth of Insecurity Engineering

Tobias highlights a critical issue in the world of lock manufacturing – insecurity engineering. “We work for all the major lock manufacturers, both in the U.S. and Europe, and the Middle East. And the problem is what some of them are doing is insecurity engineering,” Tobias explained. “They are not thinking their way through bypass problems.”

The book itself is a 700-page tome full of detailed history, legal insights, patents and intellectual property details – all crucial elements that go into the making and securing of locks. Tobias describes the public’s common misconception about locks as being simple and easy to secure, highlighting the sophisticated and complex engineering that truly goes into making them work both properly and securely.

A Pandemic Project

Mark revealed that the book was a product of his pandemic sabbatical. “I decided during the pandemic, traveling, I wasn’t being interrupted. That was my COVID sabbatical. And I was lucky I didn’t get it. I lived in Pennsylvania where we didn’t have a problem, where I lived. And so I sat for three years and wrote the book.” During this time, Tobias meticulously documented his extensive knowledge and experience, creating a comprehensive guide for industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.

An Insider’s View of Security Failures

The book is not just theoretical; it delves into real-world examples of security failures and how they were rectified. Tobias discussed several notable instances where lock manufacturers had to address security vulnerabilities following his and his team’s discoveries. “For instance, Medeco—a company whose locks we deconstructed in our previous works—had to admit their locks were not as bump-proof as they claimed. This revelation forced them, and many other companies, to rethink their designs and improve their security measures.”

Tobias also discussed the importance of patent awareness and practical knowledge for mechanical engineers, stressing that many are taught theory but lack practical application skills. “These engineers, when they go to work for lock manufacturers, often have no imagination. Now I’m generalizing, but they don’t have any imagination,” he said, emphasizing that practical problem-solving skills are essential in the industry.

The Evolution of Lock Security

One fascinating aspect of Tobias’ book is the evolution of lock security. The narrative takes readers back several centuries, detailing the methods used to bypass lever locks, pin tumbler locks, and warded locks. “I went back 4,000 years in history. That’s probably the best read I’ve ever done in my life,” Tobias remarked. The book offers a rich historical context that enhances understanding of modern security challenges.

Real-World Applications and Future Directions

Tobias and his co-author, Tobias Blaise Manus, have spent years honing their expertise. They’ve consulted for many lock manufacturers, aiming to improve security designs and address vulnerabilities. The book also outlines 180 rules Tobias developed over the years, beginning with the premise that “all security is about liability.”

The Impact of Modern Technology

The integration of electronics with traditional mechanical locks presents new challenges. Tobias talked about some vulnerabilities his team has exploited involving the interface between software and hardware. Projects like using the Flipper Zero device to clone hotel room keys and manipulate Tesla doors illustrate the ever-evolving landscape of security threats and the need for continuous innovation in response.

The Three-Two Rule: Time, Tools, and Training

Central to Tobias’s methodology is the 3T2R rule, a framework designed to assess the security of a mechanism. The rule stands for Time, Tools, and Training, followed by Repeatability and Reliability. This rule helps in understanding whether a lock is truly secure by considering not just the theoretical aspects but also practical, real-world scenarios.

Major Security Cases: A Look Back and Forward

Tobias’s book also covers major security cases, such as the vulnerabilities found in Kaba’s push-button locks and the subsequent industry changes. “Look at the Kaba nightmare in 2010 with the push-button lock that can be opened in two seconds by a magnet. … One of the critical components in that lock, and there are millions of them, is magnetic,” Tobias explained. This example underscores the need for continuous vigilance and innovation in lock security.

What’s Next?

Tobias isn’t stopping with his latest book. He revealed plans to work on a second edition that will address attacks on electronic cylinders and residential-grade electronic locks, which are increasingly becoming targets for various forms of attacks. “Residential grade electronic locks are so vulnerable to every form of attack going,” Tobias noted, hinting at a future filled with more rigorous security challenges and solutions.

Insecurity Engineering Conversation with Marc Tobias Final Thoughts

Wrapping up the interview, Tobias emphasized the importance of feedback from readers and the industry. “If you find anything wrong or want updates, get a hold of me. My email address is in the book,” he encouraged, showcasing his dedication to continual improvement and community engagement.

Conclusion

“Tobias on Locks and Insecurity Engineering” is more than just a book; it’s a comprehensive guide that merges historical context with modern challenges, providing invaluable insights for anyone involved in or curious about the field of security. Whether you are a professional locksmith, a security engineer, or simply an enthusiast, this book promises to be an essential addition to your library.

However, for putting valuables in, they’re not good. They’re so easy to open.

Common Misconceptions about Sentry Safes

A lot of locksmiths are afraid to open Sentry Safes.

Probably because it says safe. Just think of it as a metal or not even a metal box. It’s a plastic sometimes box with a cheap lock on it.

My Lock Picks | Mr. Locksmith™ White Rock

My Lock Picks: Hi, I’m Terry, and I get asked many times, what do I use for picks.

My Lock Picks

Mr. Locksmith White Rock: (604) 210-9875

Mr. Locksmith Automotive White Rock(604) 259-7617

Lock Pick Case

When I show up at a job site, I pull this out of my locksmith tools and it’s just a little map expedition case, this is a EDC case. And in it, and this is what I do probably 95% of my picking lockouts, is just, I grab this kit, it’s quick and easy.

Knipex Cobra XS 4″ Plier

And just inside is, I’ll show you what I got here. I have my latest little toy. I have my KNIPEX pliers, and these are handy and they’re narrow enough, sometimes I can get a broken key out of there, but this is for picking. I just grab this. I can have this, if I have to turn it.

Knipex Cobra XS 4 inch Piler

Lock Picks

The main tools I use, every single time. So my favorite pick is a hook pick with a diamond. And some of these are Peterson’s, Rytans, whatever. That’s my favorite pick. This one’s a little bit thicker. This one’s a little bit thinner. And I always grab, I prefer a rigid tension wrench, and I also have a flexible one. You see, I bent it. I bend this whichever way I’m going. So these three things right here I’d say open up 90, 95% of the lockouts I have if I have to pick the lock.

Plug Spinner

This is it, very simple. I either use a rigid, a flexible, and a lot of times the locks will pick the wrong way. Well, I’m not gonna re-pick it. I’m gonna use my plug spinner. I call it a flipper, a plug spinner. I have a whole different types of spinners, but this is the one in my case. I have a bigger pick set that I use if I just not picking it.

WD40

And of course I always have a little can of WD-40 I use for picking locks, not for lubricating locks, for helping me to pick it. My friends all use TriFlow and I like using WD-40. I had a lock the other day, it was funny. It was a lockout and it was a Schlage deadbolt, and they can be difficult to pick. And I was having no luck picking it at all. And then I just gave it a little spray of WD-40 and it picked like in 10 seconds. Lubricant is extremely important for picking locks. I always try to pick a lock without using lubricant, and then if I can’t pick it, then I’ll spray it. Some guys will spray it with the lubricant right off the bat, some locksmiths will just spray it right off the bat. I’ve had extreme luck. Sometimes you go there, the lock is just ready to pick, so by the time I apply tension, put the pick in, and it opens. People ask about the technique.

Sticky Lock White Rock

Sticky Lock White Rock

Single Pin Picking

I’ll show you in a couple of videos coming up, but there’s two techniques. There’s the single-pick method, which is the best method, and then there’s raking, which works well. What I do is, I rake the lock, apply tension, I rake the lock a few times and then I’ll single-pin pick it. That seems to work really good for me. Also, don’t be afraid to release tension. I’ll rake it, single-pin pick it, and then I’ll let go. And if I don’t hear click, click, click, it means I haven’t applied proper tension. So one way, instead of just picking away, some people are afraid to release tension, release the tension, then you can see, “Oh, I picked a bunch.” Or if you hear nothing, you don’t hear the pins falling back in, then you know you got bad tension. But back to the point, this is my everyday carry. If I show up a lockout, this is what I have in my kit. Hope you enjoyed the video. Please like and subscribe and stay tuned for more videos coming up. I hope you enjoyed watching this video. Subscribe to my channel. Kabar Becker BK3 Forced Entry Tool For Law Enforcement? | Mr. Locksmith White Rock

Kabar Becker BK3 Forced Entry Tool For Law Enforcement? | Mr. Locksmith White Rock: The Becker BK3 is a utility knife or a tactical knife.

Kabar Becker BK3 Forced Entry Tool For Law Enforcement | Mr. Locksmith White Rock

The BK3 is a design collaboration between Ethan Becker of BK&T and John Benner of TDI, the Tac Tool smashes, bashes, pries, hammers and cuts. It is equally powerful at lifting stubborn hinge pins, prying open doors or windows, and hammering out glass as it is efficient at cutting 550 cord. A partially serrated edge makes cutting looped and synthetic materials a breeze. MOLLE compatible hard plastic sheath included. Becker Knives “Work for a living”. Made in the USA

The Fixed Blade on the BK3 Becker TacTool by Becker Knife & Tool of KA-BAR® is made from 1095 CRO-VAN Steel and features a Flat grind. 1095 CRO-VAN steel is an easy to sharpen, plain carbon steel used in knife making. Proven to be one of the most popular steels used in KA-BAR Knives

Becker BK3

In this video, I am going to talk about the Becker BK3 or Becker Tac Tool.  It is a utility knife or a tactical knife, whatever you want to call it, we’ll just show you. What does it have to do with locksmithing? Or more importantly, forced entry for police? This does not replace the traditional bars and stuff to bash down doors, get through doors. This is not a covert tool, but it’s a good tool for police to have for if they’re part of a tech tactical team, in my opinion, or if you’re involved with a search, with a search warrant, of course, and you have some minor locks to defeat. So again, we push the covert entry, but this is kind of interesting ’cause just take a look at this. There’s a beast. So this is not an unboxing because I got just the other day I ran across a police unit using one of these and I thought I have to have one and I have to play with it. So I went and bought one. What’s the first thing I do with it? I hack away at a SentrySafe, so we will show that video. So I, a little later, we’ll have a couple of days, but it’s a monster. It’s very, very thick. You know, the handle feels good. This is not a hunting knife. I wouldn’t even call it a camping knife. I’m gonna show three tools that I think are really useful for the average police to have, you know, in the back of your car, in a MOLLE pack. And this is one of three little force tools. So this is the biggest force tool. This does not replace your more traditional police entry tools, which really just copy the firemen. The firemen have fantastic tools for breaching doors. The police have a lot of interesting tools, too. This does not replace the traditional tools. Once you’re inside and you’re running across some interior doors, bedroom doors, bedroom locks, small safes, small drawers, again, it’s a forced entry tool. You can beat on the end if you’ve got a hammer or some stuff. We take a look at it. It’s the Becker BK3. And there are lots of online stores selling it. It’s a great tool. For locksmiths, we’re not gonna show up with this. Sometimes we’re involved in, the police who have already done a forced entry. Then they call us up to open stuff inside. Again, I wouldn’t use it. I can pick the locks.

Locked Out? Call Mr. Locksmith and we will use our lock picks and not the BK#

So for locksmiths and police could use this, too. Sometimes it’s just quicker, faster. Just cut it off. We have a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel. Super fast. The drill, also known as the rotary pick. We use that. So, but that’s traditional locksmithing tools when we have to step it up. We can’t pick it. We don’t have time to pick it. We can bring in these tools. So would a locksmith use this? Not really. But I have it in my kit just for the fun of it. For police? Yes. And combined with the two other locksmith tools which will have follow-up videos. For in the back of your police car, have it there. Smash out a window? Wow, this is like, we’re gonna go to a wrecking yard. We’re gonna knock out a few windows on cars. This thing just hacks right through them. Very quick. And then clean up the glass, of course. So, a force tool. Interesting. It’s got a knife on the edge. It’s got a pretty sharp edge. You can baton on this. It’s so big. It’s got the chiseled front. This could actually slip. It’s a little bit too thick, but it can actually slip some latches. So if you have a key and knob lock, you could slip it with this. Some small padlocks, you could just hack away at it. Like I said, I took this to a SentrySafe and it’s amazing how well it did. The only part that we, that I don’t really like on this, I would call it the seat belt cutter. It didn’t really cut some seat belts too good. It was okay. There’s better tools for cutting seat belts. This was pretty sharp here and it’s got the segregated blade on it. This chops through rope, wood. Even I took some band steel, some small band steel and just cut it. You can see the finish has held up pretty good considering how bad I treated it. Again, I think this is the weak point for a pry bar. I think it will snap there, but I think you really gotta pull at it to snap it. It’s not gonna just snap. But if I had to do with some of my other tools, which I’ll show ya. I mean, if I have to wedge the door a little bit, put in one of my slip tools to slip the latch back, small deadbolts, it’d probably just pop it back. Desk locks, it’ll open it in seconds. It’s an interesting tool. I like it. It was fun when I saw it in action for the first time and I thought I have to have one of these. So I have it. And I’ll show some more videos with it in use. And I’ll show two more little tools I like to put with this, and which makes it a good all round forced entry tool. Again, not really for locksmiths. Law enforcement’s gonna have a fun time with this. Yes, you have better tools, bigger tools, but for just attach this to your MOLLE pack with the couple extra little tools, and you have yourself a nice little entry kit. Stay tuned for more videos on this in use and a couple more little forced entry tools. I hope you enjoyed watching this video. Subscribe to my channel. Also visit my website and you can see what online locksmith training I have for beginners, intermediate and advanced, as well as my covert methods of entry and my non-destructive methods of entry.

How to Take a Copy of a Key | Mr Locksmith White Rock

How To Take A Copy Of A Key | Mr Locksmith White Rock

https://mrlocksmithwhiterock.com/

Sending a locksmith the picture of a key can help us identify the key or lock. This may seem like a silly video, but it’s actually very important. I made the “How to Take a Picture of a Key” to help our customers.

  1. Take an in-focus picture of the key.
  2. Take a picture of both sides of the key.
  3. Remove any tape or obstruction covering the head of the key.
  4. If possible a picture of the end of the key.
  5. In-focus pictures of the key.

Key Copy Near Me

A lot of times customers ask Where can I get a “key copy near me’”  “I need my locks rekeyed.” or “Duplicate Key” and then they try to describe it to me. Sometimes they can, sometimes they can’t, sometimes there’s no information that you can see, but I can see. So, a lot of times we ask our customers “Take a picture, take an in-focus picture of the key.” So we ask our customers, email or just text me, a picture of your key. So this is how to take a picture of your key so I can see what you have. You gotta take both sides of the key. So take a picture there, so I can see what the make is, I can look at some of the grooves and then turn the key over and take a picture again, and then I can see from the other side I know it’s a Schlage, and on this I can see it’s a C123. So I can tell you “Yes I have that key.” So whatever key you have, whether it’s a car key, or house key, motorcycle, whatever, in focus, both sides of the key, then you can email it to me or a locksmith and we can tell you if we have that key.

Sometimes we’ve had people on fishing expeditions up north, they’ve taken their keys with them they’re in the middle up north, in the middle of nowhere, the wife is locked out, they have the key, and this one, we can actually see this one has a code, so we now know we can cut that by code and we can get that person in the house really quick and easy.

In conclusion, silly as it sounds “how to take a picture of a key”, in focus, both sides of the key, text or email, then we can tell you what you have. [email protected]

How to Make Keys to Cars, Automotive ONLINE COURSE

I rented this Volvo and it’s got the keys on a ring and somebody said just keep on twisting it, so I can get them apart, rather than try and cut it or find some pliers. So, I just twist and twist and twist like a figure eight and I got them apart. It is a lot better and I hate it when you rent a car, you have two keys stuck together. If I lose it, I lose ’em both. So, this way, simple. Just keep on twisting it, like a figure eight, ’til they pull apart. You don’t have to run around, trying to find a pair of pliers or anything. You just twist, pull apart. I had a friend, lost two keys, lost his whole set, lost two keys, it cost him $450, cost him over $600 to replace the keys and get them reprogrammed. So, this is a Volvo. This probably costs way more than that. Worst case, I gotta replace one, I don’t have to replace two. I hate that. You rent a car, it comes with that stupid tag, but just twist it, pull it and away we go. We could use a pair of pliers, but this is definitely easier and quicker.
