5.11 Best Boots for Hot Weather

Let’s talk about something that’s a little different today. Boots.

As locksmiths, we put in a lot of hours and so we’re constantly on our feet. We’re on our feet in all sorts of weather. Today we’re going talk about my 5.11 boots that I wear all the time. The 5.11 Tactile six inch Coyote boot. They’re water resistant. I promise, these boots are water proof because I’ve been in water in them and I still got my feet dry. These boots are over five years old. And I use them daily. I have two pairs of these boots, as I alternate them. I had to put in some inserts. They just seems to make your feet feel better. And they are super-comfortable.

Two of my 5.11 Best Boots for Hot Weather

I was heading to the Philippines and that place is hot and humid. It’s absolutely terrible on the feet. I’m not a flip flop person, because I like my feet protected so I can’t walk around with flip flops. These 5.11 Tactile six inch Coyote boots are meant for hot, humid, even desert environments. I wore these for almost ten weeks straight. Every single day, in the jungle, on the water, heading to little islands (if you saw, I was in McArthur Park where general McArthur landed). I went up the hill (a bunch of hills where they had to attack bunkers, Japanese-held bunkers). This 5.11 Tactile six inch Coyote boot what I had on my feet. Although I didn’t see any snakes, there’s lots of snakes there that are bad. But it was so hot, and these were absolutely fantastic. I wore them and so I thought next time I go down to Florida, Texas, I’m gonna be wearing these. These are my go-to boots now in the summer time. They’ve got this antibacterial stuff, and all sorts of bits and pieces. You can read about it online. These were super comfortable. I definitely recommend this. I’m heading back to Asia and I’m wearing these. I bought a second pair. I always like to alternate my shoes, so I’ll have these again, because they’re FANTASTIC.

5.11 Best Boots for Hot Weather 2

However, I think the only downside, when I jumped off of a boat into the salt water, I got both wet, and it didn’t take that. It took probably about four hours in the sun to dry ’em out. And it kinda pissed me off a little bit. It means that it’s not meant to go in the water. You’re gonna get wet feet if you do that. Nevertheless, for 99% of what I did, these were absolutely fantastic. The water resistance might not  be that good but, they’re so comfortable I don’t wanna add anything to them. So, if anybody has any good ideas on a boot that’s good for super hot, humid, almost desert-y jungle conditions, that has some water resistance, I’d be really interested in knowing because that’s the only downside of these boots. Other than that, 99.9% absolutely fantastic. Super super comfortable. I liked it so much that I bought a second pair. And again, this is different and nothing to do with locksmithing, but we gotta have comfortable feet. I hope you enjoyed watching this video. Subscribe to my channel. My top 3 Screwdrivers

Let us talk about three of the must have tools you have to have for your locksmith kit. Every one locksmith must have these three tools: Megapro set, Hex set, and the Tamperproof kit.

The Megapro set

The Megapro set – this is the original and inside it it has the flatheads, the Robinsons, the Phillips and some torques. That is absolutely fantastic. It’s a go-to tool. It’s always there, it’s got the tools.

The next one on my kit – the Hex set.

The Hex set

The Hex set – It’s got all the basic or the most popular sizes in it. You have to have this  screwdriver if you’re a locksmith because so many times you’ve misplaced your Allen keys. This is, a must have, fantastic tool. Especially we’re getting a lot of European made locks out there. you still need complete Allen key sets, but you can just grab this and 90% of the time, if not more, this will do the trick.

The other one is the Tamperproof kit.

The Tamperproof set

Tamperproof kit – This is the MegaPro. What it is, it’s for taking out the tamper-proof screws. It’s got all the most popular tamperproofs and torques an dthe flatheads with the holes inside. It is really, really cool.

So these are the three must have tools for everybody. You gotta have these in your locksmith kit. The original MegaPro, it’s got the most popular screws you’re going to run across every single day. The Hex, because you’re running across a lot of these in locks now, more and more all the time, this will probably, used 90% of the time, you’ll still need an Allen key set but it does the trick. And the Tamperproof. This will do for taking out those one way screws that are flatheads and it’s got the special bit for taking out the one way flatheads. It’s got the hex with the hole in it and the torques with the hole in it. Must have tools for the locksmith. For a beginner or a pro, this is a lifesaver. Have a good day. I hope you enjoyed watching this video.

On a recent trip to the Philippines, I was able to see the Oldest Lock and Door in the Philippines.

Mr. Locksmith Terry Whin-Yates Oldest Lock in the Philippines

The oldest documented house in the Philippines was built between 1675 to 1730 and is located in Barangay Parian, Cebu City, Philippines.

Considered to be one of the oldest residential houses in the Philippines, the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House was built sometime between 1675 and 1700. It was originally owned by a Chinese merchant named Don Juan Yap and his wife, Doña Maria Florido.

The materials used for the construction of the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House were coral stones that were glued together with egg whites. The roof is made of “Tisa” clay which weighs 1 kilogram in each piece. The wooden parts were made of “balayong” and “tugas” (molave) are considered to be the hardest wood of all time.

The Lock is a very simple wooden construction but it does the trick to secure the door.

(THESE PRICES AVAILABLE ONLY UNTIL May 31, 2018. YOU MUST BOOK BEFORE THEN)

Mr. Locksmith Abloy High Security Deadbolt

Residents of Vancouver, you have spoken, we have listened. 90% of break-ins are preventable, including at your complex. We’ve put together some recommendations on security upgrades for your complex and for your individual units. The Taymor locks that were installed on your property during the building envelope renovation are not high security. They’re a $10 deadbolt. They are not bump resistant, nor pick resistant. Mr. Locksmith is the largest locksmith company in the Lower Mainland they offer high security deadbolt.

If you wish to book an appointment to improve the security of your home  book online.

I am also willing to come to your Strata or Condo AGM or if the owners decide, a security meeting.

Be proactive, do not let a burglar break-in because of a low quality deadbolt installed on your front door.

I train Locksmiths, Military, Police and Government agencies convert and overt methods of entry. The one Deadbolt on the market that has “no known convert” methods of entry and what I consider not only “pick resistant” but “pick proof” is Abloy Protec 2 Deadbolts. Most thieves go for the front door instead of the back door, or the windows. They act like they’re going to buy something, then kick the door in.

Mr. Locksmith™ is an ABLOY® Protec Authorized Dealer

Prepping the door for installation of an Abloy Deadbolt, Door Reinforcer and Strike Plate (Vancouver Special)

If I get locked out, I know that it will not be an easy job gaining access through my Abloy High Security Deadbolt Protec 2 deadbolt. Most deadbolts and High Security deadbolts can be drilled open is seconds or minutes. I know that I or anybody will be spending a lot of time, effort and money trying to destroy my Abloy deadbolt.

If you wish to book an appointment to improve the security of house or condo book online.

The face of the Abloy High Security Deadbolt has hardened steel and will chew up a dozen expensive drill bits I use to open safes.

Note: most safes are opened with one drill bit.

I have reinforced my door with a Mag Plate that doubles the strength of the door and I have reinforced the door frame with an 18″ strike with 4″ screws attaching it to the door frame making the door and frame more difficult to force or kick open.

Bottom Line: I want to protect my family, my home and my stuff and I sleep better and go to work or vacation knowing I have the best lock, ABLOY Protec 2 deadbolt installed on my doors.

We at Mr. Locksmith suggest Vancouver residents upgrade to an Abloy High Security Deadbolt deadbolt with the following.

MAY 31, 2018 PRICING:

– Abloy deadbolt supplied and installed price per door: $550-$650  + $30 per key.

– OR Schlage B660 with Commercial Grade key and cylinder $400 / $7.50 per key

– Door reinforcer: $45

– 18″ Frame / Strike reinforcer with 3″ screws: $45

– 12″ Interlocking plate: $55

– Full Length Interlocking plate: $200

All prices supplied and installed. GST & PST extra.

There are Vancouver  residents who are concerned with their security and have determined that they will require a high security lock. One of the reasons for this has to do with the problem of “Bump Keys” that have recently been highlighted in the news. A Bump Key is a device that works much like a lock pick. In addition, information regarding its construction and use is available to anyone online. As a matter of fact there are literally hundreds of videos detailing how to make and utilize a Bump Key on the Internet!

To make this situation even more serious, it doesn’t take any real level of expertise to use a Bump Key on your Taymor locks in Greenside Estates, since they are easier to use than a lock pick. Also, since a Bump Key resembles a normal key, law enforcers are less prone to noticing them, as opposed to lock picking tools. For this, and other reasons, bump-resistant and pick-resistant locks are in high demand. For locking systems of this nature, one of the most trusted names in deadbolts and other locking devices is Schlage.

Primus High-Security and Schlage B Series Locks

Schlage offers high-security Primus keys and cylinders and can also provide a 2nd milling that gives the advantage of a seamless integration with a current Schlage lock. This will also deter an unauthorized key replication by requiring an entry that is based on a pre-approved signer’s list.

The Schlage B600 Series is a commercial grade deadlock that is also exceptionally good for residential use especially in Greenside Estates, as well. This series of deadlocks possess bronze or solid brass cylinder collars along with an “ice-pick resistant” security shield. They also have ball bearings made of hardened steel, which are designed to protect their 2 heavy¼” mounting bolts against attacks that use a drill bit.

The entire B-Series (standard strikes) include a reinforcer that will attach to a wood frame with 2 heavy 3-inch screws. This design allows it to resist a kick-in attack. It will also resist cylinder wrenching due to its reinforced collars.

These locking systems can be used for more than just securing an entrance door. They are also perfect for protecting; storage facilities, pool gates, utility spaces and anywhere else where a high level of security is desired. The B600 series deadbolts can also be obtained with a choice of solid brass or bronze trim rings.

Specifications For the Schlage B 600 Series

  • Fits 1-1/2″ and 2-1/8″ lock bores
  • Meets ANSI A156.5, 1992, Grade 1 specifications
  • 1″ Bolt throw with concealed hardened steel roller to resist cutting or sawing the latchbolt
  • 2-3/4″ or 2-3/8″ backset latch
  • Accommodates door thicknesses between 1-3/4″ and 2″

We were asked about how to protect your cars, sheds, and windows and patios.

I have the Top 10 security tips to secure your home during the holiday season.

1- Lock Your Doors

2- Lights, leave the TV on

3- Mail

4- Newspapers/Flyers, etc.

5- Alarms

6- CCTV

7- No Gifts seen from the street under the Christmas Tree

8- Lock your windows, doors, etc. all the time.

9- No Empty boxes outside showing off your new TV etc.

10- Facebook and Social Media

Bonus: Engrave everything, take pictures and serial numbers.

We get it, you are proud of your acquisitions and your possessions. There is no shame in that as you have worked hard to obtain all these items after all. However, remember a constant stream of boxes littered on obvious places in your house such as TV boxes scattered by the trash bin outside, online shopping shipments delivered to your homes, etc. is one way to get you noticed. Remember, robbers usually scout neighborhoods and mark potential homes as targets before committing a robbery and if you are constantly leaving traces of your purchases outside your home, you may be as well as pointing a big red arrow towards your house

Leaving the Doors and Windows Unlocked
Over a third of burglars enter the house through the front door. After knocking to confirm no one is home, they’ll test the door to see if it’s unlocked. An alarming number of times they’ll discover they’ve hit the jackpot and walk right in. Keep your doors locked, even if you’re just running the kids to school or walking the dog. As a law enforcement officer, I took several reports of burglaries that occurred while the homeowner was right in the backyard playing with the kids. So don’t assume your presence will scare him away.

Lack of a Security System
When keeping your home safe, it’s important to leverage all your assets. This could be neighbors, proper gardening, and the police. But with cops on call several miles away, it’s unlikely that a law-abiding passerby will report a break-in. A security system can help automate this whole process for you, using censors to detect intrusion and reporting the incident to the security company, who can contact the proper authorities. You’ll need allies in your fight against burglars, and a security system is your Bat Signal.

Cars:

Realistically, cars will always get broken into if they are outside in your clusters or your visitor parking.  Auto crime is huge in both Surrey and Langley. Because Greenside Estates does not have a garage, we suggest an alarm and a club to secure them. Do not leave valuables inside of your vehicle at any time.

Windows and Patios:

A Greenside Estates resident mentioned that her neighbours living was broken to enter the house. 3M break resistance film that’s also earthquake resistant will help prevent this. Do not leave your windows and patio door unattended. When leaving your property, close all of your windows and lock them. Unlocked doors and unlocked windows are an open invitation to thieves.

Sheds:

Many residents at Greenside Estates own sheds. Shed security depends on the door, but almost exactly the same protection as your front door (when properly secured). We would install a door blocker on your shed that would fit on the front of the shed deadbolt.

Mail Boxes:

Mr. Locksmith replaces and repairs mailboxes in most cases within 24 hours. There is no reason you need to replace everything. Be cost-effective. Contact us and we’ll give you a quote on fixing your mailroom fast, quick and easy.

“I shall return” MacArthur Park in Philippines | Mr. Locksmith Blog

“I shall return” MacArthur Park in Philippines | Mr. Locksmith Blog

For further information go to Mr. Locksmith White Rock website.

I (Terry Whin-Yates) had a fun trip to the Philippines and I visited where General MacArthur made his historic landing in Leyte Philippines.

On October 20, 1944, a few hours after his troops landed, MacArthur waded ashore onto the Philippine island of Leyte. That day, he made a radio broadcast in which he declared, “People of the Philippines, I have returned!” In January 1945, his forces invaded the main Philippine island of Luzon.

The invasion had the largest Naval battle of World War 2 and the first Kamikaze attack.

Lots of very good documentaries on the numerous battles and incredible bravery of the American and Filipino troops.

General MacArthur said “I shall return” and he did. The US Navy basically bomb the heck out of Leyte and the interesting other parts, there are better other documentaries you should see, this was the biggest naval war battle in the entire World War II. This is where the Japanese put in the last stand fight. Basically, Leyte’s in the middle of the Philippines. This cut off the southern and the northern part of the Japanese navy. They came in here in mass. There was a massive naval battle, and it’s unreal when you hear about the documentaries on this, but basically a few ships, where they were told to retreat, they actually went in, right into the middle and they fought like heck and they actually discouraged the Japanese so bad they pulled off, and then the American Navy just wiped them out. The landing here, this beach, is actually called Red Beach from all the blood that was split here. Now the reason MacArthur came here, it’s smack in the middle. He could cut off the oil to Japan, but more importantly, five kilometers from here is the airbase in Tacloban. , The airstrip that’s still here to this day and is now a modern Airport. They took them a while to get it. They actually, over a hundred thousand Japanese troops died defending, to the last it was kamikazes, and the Americans lost 15 thousand plus men taking this area, taking the airfield, and then moving their way up to Ormoc to get the deepwater port so they could invade on the way to Manila. The other interesting thing, here was one of the first kamikaze attack that actually, the very first kamikaze attack was out here in this general area in the navy there. There was twenty Japanese special planes set up with 500 pounds of TNT. They had 20 of them. They couldn’t find anybody for a long time. Finally, they did find a ship, and that was the very first of the kamikazes, so it just shows how desperate they were. But again, biggest naval battle in World War II. There’s dozens and dozens of ships, hundreds of ships around the whole area. It basically broke the back of the Japanese Navy. They had no more large aircraft carriers before this battle. This cleaned off everything else they had, every other small aircraft carrier, took out some of their biggest destroyers, cruisers, everything. And again, it was just a few ships, American ships, that basically turned the tide that could’ve been a big slaughter out here. And again, they got the airfield. The interesting thing is, this area is famous for Yolanda, which was the biggest typhoon, the biggest winds ever recorded on Earth. Basically, the Americans wanted to get off of here as quick as they could because the weather, it rains and it’s so bad they couldn’t get the air covers they wanted so they got their foothold here, and then they moved all the way up to Manila. So again, I hope you enjoy the pictures here, and again, very very famous spot. This is MacArthur Park. It’s very popular as you can see, and it’s a great park and it’s really interesting history here, and all around here. I hope you enjoyed watching this video. Subscribe to my channel. Also, visit my website, and you can see what online locksmith training I have for beginners, intermediate, and advanced, as well as my covert methods of entry and my nondestructive methods of entry.

Consumer dependency on WiFi routers has surpassed the smartphone as the #1 technology US adults cannot live without for more than one day, according to data today released from the Customer and Product Experience 360 (CPX 360™) Survey by iQor, the only global managed services provider embedded in the flow between product, people and services.

As the life-blood for the connected ecosystem, a functioning WiFi router is necessary for consumers to enjoy smart devices and the connected lifestyle, including smart TVs and streaming devices, multiplayer gaming, tablets, voice-controlled virtual assistants and smart speakers, telehealth devices and IoT-enabled security systems. Currently, nearly two-thirds of US adults (64 percent) couldn’t be without WiFi for more than one day. As the smart home market and diversity of connected devices continues to grow, dependence on WiFi routers and smart home hubs will continue to intensify: the proliferation of smart devices is forecast to reach 20.4 billion globally by 2020, almost doubling from an estimated 11.1 billion in 2018.

“The fact that the WiFi-connected smart home is the most important technology consumers don’t want to be without–over the smartphone–is a shift that technology experts and brands must understand and plan for, because this is a relatively new market and consumer adoption is not yet mainstream,” said Autumn Braswell, COO, LinQ Integrated Solution at iQor. “Currently, there is no clear brand owning the connected home customer experience. We believe that whoever can help consumers fully realize the potential of the connected home reality—and connect multiple devices for maximum impact, security, and efficiency—will emerge as the brand leader five years from now.”

At the same time, as increased adoption of multiple smart home devices and appliances has heightened dependence on connectivity in the home, the CPX 360 survey also revealed other, pressing smart home-related concerns.

IoT Security Concerns Top Smart Home Security Fears

As the smart home grows in popularity, IoT top smart home security fears remain of mind for consumers. The CPX 360 survey reports that more than two-thirds (70 percent) of consumers are concerned about the lack of security from hackers who might hack into smart devices in the home; these apprehensions escalate among older generations, as nearly four out of five baby boomers (79 percent) are fearful of hackers breaching a smart connected device in their home. Data and privacy fears rank second among consumer smart home concerns. More than half of US adults (58 percent) fear lack of privacy from device manufacturers who have access to data, real-time conversations, voice patterns and search history. These security concerns are a potential barrier for mass consumer connected home adoption.

“Consumer concerns about data privacy and security, including both the unauthorized hacking of devices and theft of device data, consistently rank as one of the leading concerns about connecting devices to the Internet,” says Brad Russell, Research Director for Connected Home, Parks Associates. “Companies are working to adopt best practices for IoT data security and management to allay concerns and deliver peace of mind, including more stringent efforts to secure the home network by deep inspection of incoming and outgoing traffic and monitoring of edge devices to alert for anomalous behavior.”

Top Smart Home Security Fears “Cascade Effect” Among Connected Home Devices

The promise of the connected ecosystem is that multiple devices will work in harmony to share information and simplify tasks. However, the CPX 360 survey reports that consumers are afraid of the “cascade effect” in the smart home ecosystem. More than half of consumers (54 percent) fear that if one device fails it will cause other connected devices in the home to fail.

This is especially troubling to the consumers because they are already having problems connecting smart devices to the internet, configuring settings and interacting with other devices. Overall, in the past two years, 63 percent of survey respondents had set up issues and 48 percent had operation issues. Connecting the device to interact with other devices was difficult for nearly one-third of consumers (31 percent).

“The connected home contains multiple devices, from a variety of device manufacturers, that are all supposed to work together in harmony. When an issue arises, consumers often do not know how to identify where the issue resides: with connectivity to the internet, with the device itself or with a different device it is connected to,” said Braswell. “This gray area causes confusion with both the customer, as well as customer service departments for various device brands. The fear of the ‘cascade effect’ is real if consumers are already having smart home connectivity, set-up or operation issues.”

Brands can offset issues increasing the “cascade effect” in the connected home by educating consumers and retooling product delivery and customer support methods.

The top smart home security fears and connected ecosystem is designed to transform consumers’ lives by simplifying tasks and providing an added layer of intelligence to devices with actionable insights for the consumer,” said Hartmut Liebel, CEO of iQor. “Consumers will adopt and try a number of different devices and those that enhance their lives and work seamlessly will secure a permanent place in the connected home. The ability to easily operate these connected devices and services, and to readily obtain customer support when needed, will be the crucial factor in adoption. Brands need to expand proactive engagement efforts and simplify products to minimize set-up frustration and directly address consumer concerns around privacy and security.”

Consumers Worried IoT Leading to Heightened Dependence on Technology

The increased value of the WiFi router speaks to the growing adoption of the smart home lifestyle and the desire for the convenience that the connected ecosystem provides, but consumers have reservations about IoT creating an unhealthy dependence on technology. More than half of US adults (53 percent) are concerned that IoT and smart devices will lead to a heightened dependence on technology to conduct daily tasks.

The CPX 360 survey reports that more than 90 percent of consumer households today have a smartphone and that new connected technology is rapidly being adopted. Almost half of the consumer households (42 percent) have a smart TV, nearly one in four have a health wearable device, like a Fitbit, and 16 percent have a voice-controlled virtual assistant, like Alexa or Google home.
