Sending a locksmith the picture of a key can help us identify the key or lock. This may seem like a silly video, but it’s actually very important. I made the “How to Take a Picture of a Key” to help our customers.

  1. Take an in-focus picture of the key.
  2. Take a picture of both sides of the key.
  3. Remove any tape or obstruction covering the head of the key.
  4. If possible a picture of the end of the key.
  5. In-focus pictures of the key.

A lot of times customers ask Where can I get a “key copy near me’”  “I need my locks rekeyed.” or “Duplicate Key” and then they try to describe it to me. Sometimes they can, sometimes they can’t, sometimes there’s no information that you can see, but I can see. So, a lot of times we ask our customers “Take a picture, take an in-focus picture of the key.” So we ask our customers, email or just text me, a picture of your key. So this is how to take a picture of your key so I can see what you have. You gotta take both sides of the key. So take a picture there, so I can see what the make is, I can look at some of the grooves and then turn the key over and take a picture again, and then I can see from the other side I know it’s a Schlage, and on this I can see it’s a C123. So I can tell you “Yes I have that key.” So whatever key you have, whether it’s a car key, or house key, motorcycle, whatever, in focus, both sides of the key, then you can email it to me or a locksmith and we can tell you if we have that key.

Sometimes we’ve had people on fishing expeditions up north, they’ve taken their keys with them they’re in the middle up north, in the middle of nowhere, the wife is locked out, they have the key, and this one, we can actually see this one has a code, so we now know we can cut that by code and we can get that person in the house really quick and easy.

I rented this Volvo and it’s got the keys on a ring and somebody said just keep on twisting it, so I can get them apart, rather than try and cut it or find some pliers. So, I just twist and twist and twist like a figure eight and I got them apart. It is a lot better and I hate it when you rent a car, you have two keys stuck together. If I lose it, I lose ’em both. So, this way, simple. Just keep on twisting it, like a figure eight, ’til they pull apart. You don’t have to run around, trying to find a pair of pliers or anything. You just twist, pull apart. I had a friend, lost two keys, lost his whole set, lost two keys, it cost him $450, cost him over $600 to replace the keys and get them reprogrammed. So, this is a Volvo. This probably costs way more than that. Worst case, I gotta replace one, I don’t have to replace two. I hate that. You rent a car, it comes with that stupid tag, but just twist it, pull it and away we go. We could use a pair of pliers, but this is definitely easier and quicker.

I bought the wrong inverter. I wanted to be able to put it in my service truck or my camper or whatever, but this is for my service truck. So I wanted to be able to take 12 volts from the battery and be able to plug in 110 key machines. Now, in theory, this is a great deal. This was on sale for like $100, it is a 12 volt to 110 volt Modified sine wave 2,000-watt inverter, it’s more than I need, it’s going be perfect for my key machines. So I thought. I’m not an expert on inverters but the first thing I learned is there are actually two types: Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave

That will be great for the key machines. However, this is a modified sine and what I need is the pure or the regular Sine Wave. So the problem you’ll run across between the regular wave which is considered clean, and this modified one which is squared off is the modified wave is not good for if you are running computers. So it’s not as clean. That’s why they’re really inexpensive. It is going to cost me two, three, four times more money for getting the proper one I want. And the reason I am not going to use this one, it will do the trick for the basic duplicator key machines, however my Miracle A9S and also my ITL are code machines and they run circuit boards, they are like mini little computers on there. I am going to have to take it back now, it’s really really good but it’s a Modified Wave and I can’t use this on my computer key machines. I’m risking problems. I could be wrong, I am not going to take a chance, I will go out there and get the proper one for my locksmith service truck.

First aid kit for locksmiths. We are in our service vehicles all day long. It’s smart to have a first aid kit in your service truck. Also, you should have one in the house and you should have one in your personal car.

Everybody has their personal choices for a First Aid Kit and this is mine. I have a Smith and Weston folding knife with a glass breaker and seat belt cutter. I like having a black marker so you can write the person’s name on their forehead or time a tourniquet was applied, etc.

Some people like a couple of tourniquets in their kit. Also, I have my boo-boo kit, band-aids, butterfly straps, butterfly bandaids, alcohol wipes, iodine wipes, antibiotics, Tylenol, Advil, some stomach medicine, pair of gloves, scissors, tweezers, forceps, space blanket, Israeli bandages, quick clots, gauze, triangular bandage and more.

We are lucky in North America and most Western societies, we have the Good Samaritan Act, as long as you’re trying to help, in most cases you are not going to get sued, we are not doctors, we’re just trying to help.

The Pandemic has closed down most Retail Stores and Businesses in Vancouver and the World.

The larger Chains quickly boarded their storefronts with Plywood.

Other businesses are starting board up windows to guard against crime after closing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vancouver Police Department says commercial break-ins have increased and patrols have been beefed up in hardest-hit areas.


In a March 26 press release, the VPD said some criminals are trying to take advantage of the situation and it’s “taking significant measures to combat property crime while local and provincial measures are in place to address the spread of COVID-19.”

To increase security, the VPD advises Vancouver businesses to:

Move merchandise away from windows and out of view or remove it from the retail space altogether

Use window shutters to minimize damage and reduce visibility

Upgrade locks

Increase outdoor lighting levels to ensure the space around your business is visible and well-lit

Aside from the VPD increasing patrols in some areas, property crime detectives are also running several investigative projects to target known offenders.

Break-ins quadruple in Vancouver as stores shut for COVID-19 and the crime stats are increasing.

Because of all of the ongoing theft with my pick-up truck and camper, even though I got alarms on everything. I am going heavy duty on everything. I’ve gotta protect my propane tanks, I’ve gotta protect my recovery boards, my gas, my jerry cans. I finally got fed up with losing propane tanks, and my truck getting broken into. They stole my hammock. They are just taking bits and pieces. This is what I’m doing. Talked to the guys at Pacific Lock. Said, ‘Hey, I’ve got some problems. I want to go heavy-duty.’ Hokey puck lock will go on the back door. This is pretty standard stuff. I got all my little cable locks and small chain I’ll just do the little padlocks to sort of keep things down on the roof rack, and bits and pieces in some of the luggage inside the camper. But this is what I’m really excited about is the hockey puck or the puck lock that has a chain in it. So I can put various length chains and right off the bat this is gonna go lag bolted on right the way through on my propane tanks. And this will work for anybody’s camper trailer, RV. This is going to be fun. So I’m probably going to get a couple more of these. I’m going to use it for my propane tanks, my recovery boards, or traction boards, and also my jerry cans. It has a crappy little lock on it and the price of gas now and the military cans, my military-style jerry cans, just cause they’re heavy-duty, they haven’t been stoled yet. But I’m going to put this on it. So, stay tuned for we’re going to install all this stuff. We’re going to upgrade the security on my camper. And this will be good for anybody with overland vehicles, keep the preppers happy, you can secure your stuff when it’s sitting in your driveway or wherever you have it. Welcome back, this is “How to become an Automotive Locksmith.”

I have been making keys to cars the day I got my driver’s license, at 16 years old and one day. I got my driver’s license and the first thing I did was load up the trunk of the car with tools so I could go out there and make keys to cars. I was opening cars like crazy, I’m only 16, we had a family locksmith business, so I’m opening up cars. It was so easy, back in those days, a slim jim, a flat piece of band steel we made, and a coat hanger. And I had a chrome-plated coat hanger because people got upset if I took their coat hanger and opened up their door, with the button. I made a little shepherd’s hook and opened it, they got mad and they didn’t want to pay, but if I took out this shiny, chrome coat hanger and opened up their door, they just thought I was a genius. I’ve been doing this a long time, been making keys to cars, and actually, it was very easy, when I was a kid, and teenager, and then into my 20s, cars were a mechanical key. If you had the keys, a lot of the automotive had the key codes, it was a fun business and not too many people did it. Which brings us to nowadays, and automotive locksmithing. We have transponder keys, we have chips within the keys, now we have prox keys that don’t even require you to plug it into the car. You just put it in your pocket, go up to your car. I got a brand new Toyota, go up into my, just walk up to the door, pull it, pull the door handle, it opens up, I sit in the car, I push the button, and away I go. Now some people say this creates less opportunity for locksmiths, but the dealers are extremely expensive. Sometimes, we’re about the same price, but the customer doesn’t have to tow the car. We can go onsite, make keys to the car. It’s becoming more complex, but it’s actually becoming a little bit easier. You can now plug into the vehicles, and make keys to it and program our keys. So automotive locksmithing, even though it’s more complex, has become extremely more profitable. To make keys to some of the new cars, the customers are looking at hundreds, or sometimes thousands of dollars from the dealership. So we can make keys to cars way less than the dealerships. Sometimes we have the same price, but a lot of times we’re more convenient, we show up, plus we’re seven days a week, 24 hours a day if you want to do that, as well. Recently, I tested 5+ Car Key Programmers to see if they could add a key to a
2014 Ford Mustang. Between tests, I erased the key and started fresh.

Also, not only which Programmer would add a new Ford Transponder key but bypass the Ford 10 minute wait time.

How to program a remote control

Here are the basic steps for programming a remote control to a garage door opener.

Program Using Your Garage Door Opener LEARN Button

  1. Locate the LEARN button on the garage door opener.
  2. Press and immediately release the LEARN button. The LEARN LED will glow steadily.
  3. Within 30 seconds, press the button on the remote control that you wish to operate your garage door.
  4. The garage door opener lights will flash or two clicks will be heard. The remote control is programmed.

Be sure to clear the garage door area of any obstructions.
